Vacation & Travel

Why do we actually go to the trouble of driving somewhere? Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to stay at home? That may be partly true, because traveling is no longer a cheap affair these days. Motorhomes, caravans or hotels represent a large cost factor. Even backpackers should have a few coins to spare to travel for a few weeks. But no matter what type of travel you choose, the main thing is that you travel at all.

Traveling is important in life because it opens up a new way of living and being and offers relaxation from your own "self".

Find new connections to people and places, immerse yourself in other cultures, broaden your perspective! You can learn so much and develop personally through travel.

Traveling is challenging: emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. Those who learn to leave their comfort zone and current perception, to overcome their resistance or fears, will open up to new perspectives, find new friends, a new way of life and open themselves up to new possibilities.

Camping with Tent, Caravan or Motorhome?

Sunset at Lakolk Beach – Rømø / DK

Holidays are the time to relax and to have fun. But not everyone is made for a holiday in a hotel or holiday apartment. Maybe you have children or pets or you just don't want to spend so much money on accommodation. Some people just want to get back into nature, others maybe want to be without the time constraints of hotels or holiday apartments, and others just want to sleep in their own bed, no matter where they are. Camping is ideal for this, and there are options ranging from very cheap and spartan to luxury glamping for a lot of money [with a wellness area and entertainment for the children]. I've tried everything, from a dump on the outskirts of town [not recommended at all] to a multi-star hotel [very expensive], from a mini tent to a 10-meter-long mobile home (RV) with all the extras. I've also tried lodges [I find them very good] and "Bed & Breakfast" [not really my thing]. Believe me, I know a little bit of what I'm talking about.

With the tent at Veteran's Memorial Park Campground / CA - USA

If you want to be free and independent and travel light, a tent is a good option. However, a tent holiday like this doesn't take your intervertebral discs into consideration, as the bed usually consists of a sleeping pad, air mattress or camp bed [luxury!]!

With the caravan in Rothenburg o.d.Tauber / Germany

If you want to drive to a campsite and explore the surrounding area from there, a caravan and car are the best option. Pet and child-friendly vacation with little effort at moderate prices.

With the motorhome on the campground Seepark / Kirchheim

If you're looking for "the road is the destination" on holiday, you should definitely go for a motorhome. This way you can explore long distances and scenic roads and then just fall into bed in the evening.

Please read and take this text to heart so that we can all continue to pursue our hobby.
This applies to every vacation, not just on the North Sea!

Holidays on the North Sea...

... mean fun, wind, sea and wide open spaces. But it also means that we are only guests here. Accordingly, we should actually try to disturb the daily routine of the locals as little as possible. There are hundreds of holiday homes, hotels, apartments and similar accommodations on the North Sea. But since I come from a tourist region, I know that good living space is now unaffordable for the locals thanks to the many holiday homes. Therefore, I am of the opinion that you should not go on holiday in holiday homes. I think hotels, guest houses or youth hostels are fine. In my opinion, the type of holiday that has the least impact on the living space of the locals is camping. A little spot, a little water and electricity is actually all a camper needs. They come with their own home and do not take away anyone's apartment in the holiday region. However, campers should also stick to a few things!

Motorhome

Being stingy is cool - or is it?

I don't think that's cool at all. Some campers buy a motorhome for around €70,000 or more and are then too stingy to drive to a campsite. It's better to park the thing on a meadow somewhere, because it's already there anyway. These people forget that this land belongs to someone. Nature preserves are particularly popular with wild campers. It's so quiet there, not a soul around - pure nature. That's true, but camping is prohibited in nature preserves! The word says it all: nature conservation = protecting nature! So stay away from there with your motorhomes.

A great idea - or is it?

Emptying the waste water and sewage tanks into nature is also popular with some "frugal contemporaries". This is a mess and is punished accordingly. You can empty and clean your tanks at any campsite. I think it's absolutely fine that campsites charge a fee for this. Every real camper also disposes of their rubbish properly. Unfortunately, there are also a few "stingy" colleagues here who spread their rubbish around nature. All real campers who follow the rules and regulations are brought into disrepute by these black sheep. Please, dear "freestanding- I'll save money-would-be-campers, who want to enjoy freedom, stick to the rules, so we can all benefit from this wonderful hobby.

CAMPING SITES - CHECKED PRIVATELY

There are campsite guides like sand on the beach. You can read about everything you're interested in there, whether the site is good or bad, expensive or cheap, or whether it offers or has anything else. So I don't think there's any reason to create a campsite section here. Anyone can read everything important and informative in any campsite guide and choose their own campsite from the professional, verified(?) reviews. What I'm doing here is this: I'm simply presenting places that I've personally visited with my camper (motorhome or caravan).

CAMPING SITES - OUTSIDE GERMANY

So every now and then I find myself abroad. Since our agenda at the moment is to explore our own country, my list of foreign, European campsites is not really long. Nevertheless, there are a few places that we have visited. We have also visited Austria and Switzerland several times, but we have always stayed on private property. Since these require special permission, I have not listed them here.

CAMPING SITES - ACROSS THE USA

On this page I present the campsites that I visited on my travels through the USA. I have been there with a motorhome, a tent and a car (KOA cabins) for more than a decade. Most of the campsites that I visited were part of the KOA (Campgrounds of America) chain because these sites are guarded and fenced in, very clean and well-maintained and generally have excellent service. Campsites that have an "X - " in front of their name no longer exist. Some campsites are also no longer KOAs and are run by other companies.
